Exercise Physiology

inSports’ clinical Exercise Physiologists are accredited allied health specialists. They can analyse your fitness and help you improve your health or maintain good health. Many people suffer chronic conditions which can worsen over time. Our Exercise Physiologists offer interventions that help prevent, manage and treat many chronic conditions.

The treatments are exercise-based and include education around health and physical activity. Their advice enables people to make healthy changes to their lifestyles.

Our Exercise Physiologists also work with amateur and professional athletes to improve performance.

Should I see an Exercise Physiologist?

There are many reasons why people consult an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP). Often people are provided with referrals to an AEP after being diagnosed with a chronic health condition by a medical practitioner.

These conditions can include:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Metabolic disease
  • Neurological disease
  • Musculoskeletal disease (including arthritis, osteoporosis/osteopenia, acute and/or chronic musculoskeletal issues)
  • Pre-surgery conditioning, post-surgery rehabilitation
  • Sore knees, backs etc.
  • Depression, anxiety, or other serious mental illness (PTSD, schizophrenia)
  • Cancer

Accredited exercise physiologists may also assist with:

  • Assessments of functional capacity
  • Advice on lifestyle modification to improve health status
  • Exercise prescriptions for strength and function improvement pre- and post- surgery
  • Workplace functional readiness assessments.

What services do Exercise Physiologists provide?

AEPs can provide tailored exercise programs. They may promote leisure-time and incidental activity. They may also offer counselling to reduce sedentary behaviours. Their assistance includes an assessment to ensure the activity is safe, effective and likely to be maintained in the long term.

Services can include the below:

  • behavioural coaching
  • health education
  • exercise counselling
  • physical rehabilitation
  • Accredited Exercise Physiologists do not provide invasive services (except for point of care testing). They also do not provide diagnosis, joint manipulation or pharmaceutical medicines

How are Exercise Physiologists qualified?

All AEPs hold a bachelor degree in Exercise Science and post graduate qualification as a clinician. They complete continuing professional development and work under a code of ethics. They are also registered with the governing body, Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA).

AEPs are experts in anatomy, biomechanics, human physiology and the management of chronic disease. As registered Allied Health Providers they are recognised by Medicare and Private Health funds.
