Diabetes Education and Maintenancediabetes program

Do you have diabetes, or are you at risk of diabetes?

Our eight-week Diabetes Education and Maintenance Program could improve your health and help you manage or prevent diabetes. It offers physical activities, educational workshops, and group support to help you better manage your health. It is also funded by Medicare when supported by a GP Management Plan.

When & Where

Logan Metro – Thursdays 6.00 pm – 7.00 pm

Cost

$5 per session

The session starts with a 30 minute discussion/seminar followed by 30 minutes of exercise in the gym.

There is a maximum of 15 participants per session so bookings are essential.

Anyone can attend however, if you have a referral from your GP, a one-on-one appointment is recommended before attending your first session.

How does it work?

Our professional clinical exercise physiologists will tailor the eight-week diabetes program to suit your individual health goals and lifestyle. inSports exercise scientists and the wider Logan Leisure Centres team will support you through the program. And since most of the sessions are held in groups, you will also have the support of your fellow group members!

What are the benefits of the Diabetes Program?

Like any health program, the results you achieve will depend on your commitment and participation in the program. Participants can typically expect to benefit from some or all of the following –

What is the difference between the individual and group sessions in the program?

In the individual session, you will meet your treating exercise physiologist. They will give you an overview of the program and take you through an assessment and screening process. Your assigned exercise physiologist will talk to you about your goals and what’s happening with you physically. This will enable them to create a tailored program for you.

In the group session, you receive one hour each week of education and group exercise. Within this time, you’ll go through the educational materials and can ask any questions you may have. Next, you’ll participate in a movement and exercise session under the guidance of your exercise physiologist.

Who is eligible for the diabetes program?

If you have Type 2 Diabetes your GP can prepare a GP Management Plan. Once you have this you may be referred for a group allied health service to help you manage your diabetes. You will get the most out of the program if you contribute to the group process and commit to following the health recommendations.

If you are a resident of an aged care facility, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. Your GP will need to be contributing to a multidisciplinary care plan prepared by the facility.

Weight Education and ManagementWeight Loss program

Being a healthy weight is important for overall health. It also helps prevent and control many diseases and conditions. But managing weight can be a complex process that requires professional support.

Our Weight Education and Support program is a six-week intensive health and fitness education program that brings together all the elements of successful weight management. After the six weeks, you can continue your weight management journey in weekly, supervised group sessions.

How does it work?

The program addresses many factors and is tailored to individual needs and lifestyles.

It includes –

  • Structured exercise classes
  • Education workshops
  • A series of supported maintenance sessions

Weekly group exercise sessions are delivered by one of our clinical exercise physiologists, or accredited exercise scientists.

There are also weekly education workshops that cover issues such as –

  • Setting healthy goals
  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Persistent conditions
  • Responsible alcohol consumption
  • Stress management
  • Maintaining a healthy heart

You will be given the skills and knowledge you need to self-manage your body at a level that is appropriate for you with the support of the inSports team.

Our accredited exercise physiologists will guide you through the weekly sessions. Our exercise scientists in the gym will support you through your gym workouts.

Our highly qualified allied health team can advise you on any further social assistance or support you may need. The group structure also encourages group members to support each other during the program.

During the six-weeks of intensive sessions, we’ll give you an overview of the program. You’ll meet the team and we’ll take you through an assessment and screening process.

We will talk to you about your goals and what’s happening with you physically. This will enable us to create a tailored education and exercise program for you.

You’ll learn the how’s and why’s of weight management and the importance of purposeful movement.

The maintenance sessions are a one-hour point of contact for you to discuss your progress or setbacks. You’ll also participate in a movement and exercise session under the guidance of your exercise physiologist.

Live Well Logan classes

The staff at Logan Leisure Centre gyms are excited to continue to deliver Live Well Logan classes as part of our normal group fitness timetable. In fact, our gyms are the number one provider of Live Well Logan classes, offering over a dozen classes every week for just $4 (or free to gym members).

We’re always keen to maximise the number of Logan residents that can access fitness classes for a low rate. Our classes include a range of exercise options from low-impact gentle exercise to bootcamp and boxing.

Movemore

Movemore is a gentle, low-to-moderate physical activity program. It has been designed to support people with stable, long-term health conditions or those who haven’t exercised in a while. People participating in indoor fitness class

Movemore group exercise sessions are run by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist. The exercises help prevent and manage chronic disease and injuries.
Many conditions are supported by the program. These include, but are not limited to, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, and obesity.
The program is also ideal for falls prevention and anyone wishing to exercise in a safe and social environment

Each session involves

  • aerobic and strength training
  • coordination and flexibility exercises and balance training

When & Where

Logan Metro – Friday, 10:45 am
Logan North – Tuesday, 11:30 am and Wednesday, 10:30 am

Cost

Free for gym members and $4.00 for non-gym members.

What to bring

Participants should wear comfortable clothing and closed in shoes/joggers. Also, bring a water bottle and any relevant medication.
Session duration is 60 minutes.

LungPowerlungs in action

LungPower aims to assist people who are living with chronic lung conditions or heart failure to maintain their health and fitness.

The program is run by inSports’ exercise physiologists and comprises both exercise and education. It’s a flexible program that can be tailored to meet individual needs – from mild to moderate or severe lung disease. The exercise component focuses on increasing physical function. This can include walking, upper and lower body strength exercises, balance and stretching. The education component focuses on breathing techniques and conserving energy.

Golden Game TimeGolden game Time

If you’re over 65 and enjoy playing sport then this program will enable you to “get back in the game”. Golden Game Time is designed by our allied health team to enable older people to stay active. It includes modified games and activities such as beach ball volleyball, walking netball, badminton, and tennis.

Our allied health professionals tailor activities to your level which means you don’t have to worry about the activities being too hard or too easy!

The program includes a pick-up and drop-off service by TransitCare to and from the Logan Metro Sports and Events Centre.

It’s a fun and easy way to get out and get active. And best of all, the first 10 sessions are FREE.
